The constituency covers the Harischandrapur I and Harishchandrapur II Community Development Blocks, sitting in the central-northern belt of Malda. Harishchandrapur is one of the more demographically complex constituencies in Malda Uttar. It has a significant Muslim population concentrated in the riverine areas, a Hindu farming community, and a moderate SC presence. This multi-community composition has historically made it a genuine three-cornered contest between INC, TMC, and the Left — a political character that persists to this day.

Harishchandrapur Assembly Constituency falls under the Maldaha Uttar Lok Sabha constituency.

Voter & Demographic Profile

As per the 2011 Census, total population is approximately 3,37,959, 100% rural. SC ratio is 15.79%, ST is 3.08%. There are approximately 2,38,374 registered electors with 241 polling stations.

Full Election History (2001–2021)

Harishchandrapur has historically been contested between INC and Forward Bloc/Left parties. Since 1977, INC and FBL (Forward Bloc Left) have each won the seat three times, making it one of the more evenly split seats in Malda's political history.

2001 & 2006 — Forward Bloc/Left Period During the high point of Left rule, Forward Bloc held Harishchandrapur. Congress continued to contest strongly but could not overcome the Left machinery.

2011 — Congress Breaks Back In As Congress staged its Malda comeback in 2011, Harishchandrapur swung to INC. The party's deep roots among minority voters and its organisational presence from earlier eras reasserted themselves.

2016 — INC Retains Convincingly Alam Mostaque of INC won Harischandrapur in 2016, defeating TMC's Tajmul Hossain by a margin of 17,857 votes — a substantial win that showed Congress's continued strength in this mixed constituency. BJP received just 15.05%, a distant third.

2021 — TMC Wrests the Seat The 2021 election saw TMC flip Harischandrapur in the BJP-TMC wave context. With Tajmul Hossain again contesting for TMC, and INC's Mustaq Alam and BJP's Md. Matiur Rahman in the fray, TMC leveraged the state-wide wave and minority consolidation to take the seat. The INC vote collapsed in most of Malda in 2021, benefiting TMC.

2026 Candidate Profiles

TMC Candidate: Md Matebur Rahman — Defending a New Hold TMC has named Md Matebur Rahman for 2026. Whether this is the sitting MLA (if the 2021 TMC winner) or a new face indicates TMC may be refreshing its candidate pool here. The party will seek to consolidate the minority vote that delivered the 2021 win while making inroads with the Hindu farming electorate.

BJP Candidate: BJP's candidate for Harishchandrapur was not included in the first  list at the time of research. BJP's 2026 Candidate in Harishchandrapur is Ratan Das.

Congress Factor: With INC historically competitive here (34.9% in 2016) and the party fielding its own candidates independently in 2026, the Congress vote could once again be decisive. If Congress retains a double-digit vote share, the contest becomes genuinely three-cornered.
