Chanchal Assembly Constituency, numbered AC 45, is a general (unreserved) seat and one of Malda's more politically significant constituencies. Chanchal town — the constituency's administrative hub — is one of the major market centres of northern Malda, sitting on National Highway routes that connect Malda with Murshidabad and West Dinajpur.

The constituency covers the Chanchal I and Chanchal II Community Development Blocks, a predominantly rural mosaic of rice cultivation, sericulture, and small-scale trade. The Muslim population in Chanchal is notably high, making it one of the more minority-dominated constituencies in the Maldaha Uttar LS segment.

Chanchal Assembly Constituency falls under the Maldaha Uttar Lok Sabha constituency.

Voter & Demographic Profile

The 2011 Census puts Chanchal's population at approximately 3,17,619, with 98.25% rural and only 1.75% urban. This is one of the most rural constituencies in Malda. The SC ratio is approximately 17.44%, and the constituency has a large Muslim majority in several panchayat areas.

Full Election History (2001–2021)

Chanchal has historically been a Congress stronghold in the era before Left domination, and the INC has won the seat multiple times since 1977. The seat has changed hands between INC and TMC in recent years.

2001 & 2006 — Left Resistance Chanchal saw competitive contests between INC and the Left in the early 2000s. Congress's deep roots in this minority-dominated constituency gave it an advantage that the Left found difficult to overcome consistently.

2011 — Congress Holds INC retained Chanchal in 2011 even as TMC swept Bengal — another example of Malda's Congress exceptionalism. The minority-heavy composition of the constituency favoured Congress, which had established organisational structures dating back decades.

2016 — INC Retains Congress won Chanchal again in 2016. Chanchal was one of the few places where INC demonstrated genuine resilience against both the TMC machine and the BJP wave.

2021 — TMC's Nihar Ranjan Ghosh Sweeps Chanchal The 2021 election brought a seismic shift. TMC fielded Nihar Ranjan Ghosh — who had famously won English Bazar as an Independent backed by LF+Congress in 2016 — and he swept Chanchal in what was one of Malda's most lopsided results:

CandidatePartyVotesVote %
Nihar Ranjan GhoshTMC58.08%
Dipankar RamBJP24.35%
Asif MehboobINC15.70%

Winning margin: 67,338 votes. This was the largest winning margin of any constituency in Malda in 2021 — a landslide that signalled a massive consolidation of minority votes behind TMC.

2024 LS Reversal: In the 2024 parliamentary election, INC clawed back dramatically — 35.33% — almost matching TMC's 35.15%, with BJP at 26.59%. This three-way near-parity is the defining backdrop for 2026.

2026 Candidate Profiles

TMC Candidate: Prasun Banerjee — A New Name Replacing a Sitting MLA TMC has fielded Prasun Banerjee — replacing sitting MLA Nihar Ranjan Ghosh — for 2026. The decision to field a fresh candidate here is notable. Nihar Ranjan Ghosh, who won by 67,000 votes in 2021, has been dropped. This could signal internal party dynamics or an attempt to bring in a new profile.

BJP Candidate: Ratan Das BJP has named Ratan Das as its candidate. With BJP at 24.35% in 2021 and 26.59% in 2024 LS, the party's base is relatively firm in Chanchal. The question is whether BJP can consolidate Hindu votes and attract disaffected Congress voters.

Key Dynamic: INC's 35.33% in 2024 LS is a major variable. If Congress fields a strong candidate and retains even a fraction of that, the Chanchal outcome becomes genuinely unpredictable. However, assembly election dynamics differ from Lok Sabha contests.
