Constituency Overview & Geography

Manikchak Assembly Constituency, numbered AC 49, is a general (unreserved) seat in Malda district. It covers the Manikchak Community Development Block, which sits along the eastern bank of the Ganga — making it one of the most river-influenced constituencies in Malda. The Ganga-Padma river system forms Manikchak's eastern boundary, and the area has been periodically affected by river erosion (bhanga), which has forced periodic displacement of villages and communities.

This riverine geography has created a constituency with a large floating agricultural population, significant char (sandbank) land cultivation, and a historically high degree of economic vulnerability. The erosion-displacement dynamic also introduces periodic voter roll uncertainty — a factor that electoral officials monitor closely.

Manikchak Assembly Constituency falls under the Maldaha Dakshin Lok Sabha constituency.

Voter & Demographic Profile

Population approximately 3,30,000 (2011 Census). The Muslim population here is very significant — Manikchak borders the Kaliachak belt and shares its demographic character. SC representation is present but not dominant. The char lands of the Ganga host communities that are among the most economically marginalised in the district.

In 2024 LS, the Maldaha Dakshin seat was won by Congress's Isha Khan Chowdhary, suggesting Congress remains competitive in this segment.

Full Election History (2001–2021)

Manikchak has traditionally been a Congress-aligned seat in Malda's political landscape, with the party holding it during its dominant years. The erosion belt communities often voted on welfare-delivery lines.

2001 & 2006 — Left Holds The Left was competitive in Manikchak during its height, winning the seat against Congress challenge.

2011 — Congress Reasserts INC won Manikchak in 2011, as the Congress wave swept through Malda alongside the TMC state wave.

2016 — INC Retains Congress held Manikchak in 2016, maintaining its Malda bloc status.

2021 — TMC Takes the Seat In the 2021 sweep, TMC absorbed the Congress minority vote in Manikchak and won the seat. The state-level welfare delivery narrative (particularly for erosion-affected communities who received state relief) was central to TMC's campaign here.

2026 Candidate Profiles

TMC Candidate: Kabita Mandal — New Face in a Changed Seat TMC has fielded Kabita Mandal — a woman candidate and new face — replacing the previous winner. This reflects TMC's strategy in parts of Maldaha Dakshin to deploy women candidates, leveraging the Lakshmi Bhandar beneficiary base that overwhelmingly consists of women voters.

BJP Candidate: Gaur Chandra Mandal BJP has named Gaur Chandra Mandal — a local leader who will seek to consolidate the Hindu vote and contest on development and CAA/SIR-related identity issues.

Congress Factor: Congress has fielded Md. Ansarul Hoque for Manikchak. In a minority-heavy constituency within Maldaha Dakshin — a seat that Congress won in 2024 LS — the INC could be a genuine factor in fragmenting the opposition vote or even mounting a surprise challenge.
