Constituency Overview & Geography

Malatipur Assembly Constituency, numbered AC 47, is a general (unreserved) seat in Malda district. Geographically, it sits in the central-north of Malda, covering the Kaliachak I, Kaliachak II, and adjoining panchayat areas. The Kaliachak belt — of which Malatipur is the assembly-level expression — is one of the most politically sensitive zones in all of Malda. High Muslim population density, border proximity (near Bangladesh), and complex identity politics make Malatipur a seat of intense national and state-level attention.

The constituency borders the Old Malda area on one side and the Ratua belt on the other. It is characterised by poverty, a heavy dependence on agricultural labour, and a significant presence of SSK and MSK (school programmes), MGNREGA dependence, and government welfare infrastructure as the primary economic mediators.

Malatipur Assembly Constituency falls under the Maldaha Uttar Lok Sabha constituency.

Voter & Demographic Profile

The Muslim population is the overwhelming majority in Malatipur's panchayat areas. The SC ratio is moderate. Literacy rates are below the district average. The constituency has a large unorganised labour force.

In 2021: TMC won with Rahim Boxi, defeating BJP's Mausumi Das and INC's Alberuni Zulkarnein in a three-way contest.

Full Election History (2001–2021)

Malatipur has been a contested seat between INC and later TMC, with the Left having held it in earlier years.

2001 & 2006 — Left/CPI(M) Period The Left held Malatipur during the zenith of Left Front rule, relying on agricultural labour unions and panchayat networks.

2011 — Congress Comeback INC won Malatipur in 2011, reflecting the broader Congress dominance of Malda. Malatipur, with its large minority electorate, was traditionally Congress territory in the pre-Left era.

2016 — Another INC Hold Congress retained Malatipur in 2016, showing again that Malda's Muslim-majority constituencies were harder for TMC to crack here than elsewhere in the state.

2021 — TMC's Rahim Boxi Wins In 2021, with the broader TMC consolidation of minority votes statewide, Abdur Rahim Boxi of TMC won Malatipur, defeating BJP's Mausumi Das and INC's Alberuni Zulkarnein. Congress's collapse in Malda in 2021 opened the door for TMC to absorb minority voters here.

2026 Candidate Profiles

TMC Candidate: Abdur Rahim Boxi — Sitting MLA Defending the Seat TMC has re-nominated its sitting MLA Abdur Rahim Boxi — a signal of confidence in the incumbent's delivery record and local connect.

BJP Candidate: Ashish Das BJP has named Ashish Das for Malatipur. In a high-Muslim constituency, BJP faces a structural disadvantage. Its strategy here is to consolidate the Hindu vote (smaller but significant) and position itself on development narratives.

Congress Candidate: Mausam Benazir Noor — The Star Entry The most notable development in Malatipur 2026 is the Congress fielding Mausam Benazir Noor, the former MP from Maldaha Uttar and one of the most recognisable political figures in Malda. Noor had previously been a TMC MP before returning to Congress. Her entry transforms Malatipur into one of the most-watched contests in northern Bengal. If she can consolidate the Congress and anti-TMC minority vote, the seat becomes highly competitive for TMC.
